Use My Feet, God

Pastor Gary Oser

Over the last few months, we have been considering some different parts of our bodies. This month I want to share with you about our feet. Our feet enable us to move from place to place. They also help us to stand, walk and run.

It might surprise you, but the words “foot” and “feet” appear nearly 350 times throughout the Word of God. I want to share a few things God has done for us in regards to our feet.

Before we knew Jesus, the psalmist says that we were stuck in the miry clay and couldn’t get out. However, when we put our faith in Christ alone for salvation, Psalm 40:2 says, “He brought me out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm” (NASB). The rock He places our feet on is Jesus. Because of Jesus, we have sure footing.

There are a variety of verses from Psalms which talk about God keeping our feet from falling. Psalm 56:13 says, “For you have delivered my soul from death, indeed my feet from stumbling, so that I may walk before God in the light of the living.” Psalm 116:8 adds, “For you have rescued my soul from death, my ears from tears, my feet from stumbling.” God guides the feet of believers so that we don’t stumble and fall.

The Word of God also shares that we have some responsibilities in regards to our feet.

First, we must keep our feet from evil. Proverbs 4:26-27 say, “Watch the path of your feet and all your ways will be established. Do not turn to the right nor to the left; turn your foot from evil.” Because there is temptation and evil all around, we need to be careful where our feet lead us and always “walk away” from evil.

Second, we need to walk as Jesus walked. When I use the word at this point, I am referring not to physical but spiritual walking. There are lots of great verses which tell us how we should walk as believers. One of the best is 1 John 2:6, it says, “He that saith he abideth in Him out himself also to walk even as He walked.”

When we think about going somewhere, we should ask, “Would Jesus’ feet go there?” Finally, one of the most important uses for our feet is to take the good news of the gospel to others.

Our feet as Christians are important! God wants us to use our feet for His glory. Make the words of the old hymn your prayer, “…Take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for Thee, swift and beautiful for Thee.”
